This is the MA5K based off both the assault rifle from “Halo: Infinite” as well as the cover from the book “Halo:Ghosts of Onyx”
I wanted to achieve a design that allowed for a fully functional prop. And by that I mean every button works, everything that looks like it should do something, does. The rear sight is fully adjustable even though there’s no point. The picatinny rails are to scale and can be used for other functions. I implemented QD sling mounts to make the gun look cooler and for convenience at a convention.
What I did first was use game assets to mock up what I’d like the gun to look like. From there I began modeling from scratch with the art assets as reference only. Afterwards I began going over what I felt each button should do. The rear buttons adjust the stock. The one by the grip is the mag release. The selector switches rotate using magnets to lock in place so it would “feel” right. Trigger is a simple push spring.
The charging handle and bolt are a unique thing I had to get around. The actual dimensions of the gun do not allow for “normal” operation as the bolt can’t travel far enough back to allow for normal feeding. My solution was that as the charging handle is pulled back, the bolt rotates to give the illusion of being pulled back.
The flashlight grip can be dropped by a simple latch mechanism allowing for future modularity.
I also designed the gun to have aluminum rod to run through it to give additional strength.
